1 here was once a poor boy, the son of a woodcutter, who lazed about the house all day dreaming dreams. He let the pot boil over to put out the fire. He let the wood stand out in the yard to get sopped through by the rain - and this was in Holland where wood is very precious because there are few trees. If his parents put him on to minding the cows he would let the cows wander about and drop into bogs, glug, glug, out of sight. Send him to gather eggs and more likely than not he would come weaving and slopping home with them along the canal, and Splash! Help! - 'Oh that idiot, he's done it again!'

"They thought he was a simpleton until he began one day to carve his father's faggots of wood, and then they saw he was a genius.

"This made them crosser than ever. 'Each to each and one to one,' said his father, a great glumping man. 'Woodcutters' sons aren't artists,' and he hacked with his great axe and growled.

'"Whyever weren't you a girl?' said his mother. 'Then at least we could have set you to the washing.'

"The boy just smiled and went his way until one particularly ordinary day when the pot had boiled over and the wood in the yard was as wet as sump and the cows were all bellowing in the squelch and the canal had a coating of broken egg-shells like gigantic frog-spawn, the crunch came.

"The crunch was meant to happen to the stupid genius's head. It was meant to be caused by the leg of a table. The leg of the table was meant to crunch the head of the boy as it left the woodcutter's gigantic fist, the size of a good Dutch
